6 Newsletters That Got Me Through

6 Newsletters That Got Me Through

When the grueling process of job hunting begins, you never know how long it will take. Whether you are just company-hopping or doing a full blown career change, the process of applying, networking, applying, following up, and *hopefully* getting the interview can be daunting and exhausting. At times it can be mentally draining and defeating – for those of us who are Type A, a lack of patience plagues our personalities, and not hearing back from your dream company can be downright depressing. To take my mind off of situations out of my control, I read and tried to absorb as much as possible, turning everything into an opportunity to learn.

After 4 months, I recently finished my grueling job hunt, landed an amazing opportunity, and went through the emotional roller coaster that finding a new job always is. Throughout the process, these newsletters really got me through, offering daily tips from career advice, financial tidbits, health, lifehacks, recipes, beautiful travel photo eye-candy, and DIYs that I never would have thought of or just really needed to read at the right times. Maybe you’ve heard of these, perhaps you have not – I can’t recommend these daily reads enough! Some even offer amazing Sunday Editions that showcase some sites and articles for extended recommended reading as well. I hope you find these as helpful in your process as I did. Would love to hear of any newsletters that helped you through your latest job hunt process! Comment with any recommendations :)

Want, Lust, Must Have: YSL Small Sac Du Jour

YSL Small Sac Du JourYves Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane Small Sac du Jour, $2,750, originally from F/W 2014 collection

Saving up for this bad boy has forced me to modify how I shop. Putting away the same portion of my paycheck week after week makes the final purchase a treat that I know I’m expecting — a planned-for surprise, if you will. Watching that monetary amount grow and grow demonstrates my perseverance to myself, showing my inner shopaholic that if you hold out for something that’s timeless and you covet so dearly, the trendy pieces that catch your eye for a minute or two become less and less appealing as you start to notice your triggers. Mine are plaid, exceptional fabrics, interesting silhouettes, and uniqueness…but the deal breaker? Knowing that other people will have it. I crave pieces with a rebel-rock aesthetic, but classic enough to outstand a one-season wear.

While in LA earlier this month, my coworker and I popped into the Chanel store on Rodeo Drive to satisfy our eyecandy temptations. I’ve been in love with the Chanel Boy Bag since it came out in their F/W 2013 collection, but seeing it on nearly 8 out of every 10 women in LA was an extreme turnoff (aside from the $4,000+ price tag). Sure, I saw my YSL on a few shoulders, but a minuscule number by comparison. Same goes for most other designer pieces I crave — uniquely classic designs that a few people have, but not so blown up as a fad would merit.

This will be my first luxury designer bag I pay full ticket for out of my own pocket — others have been gifts from friends in the industry (Burberry Crush from last Christmas) or just amazing steals at discount stores (hello, Furla croc tote a la Nordstrom Rack in 2013). The hefty price tag has forced me to rethink how i shop so i could actually put aside a consistent amount to grow a “Shopping Fund,” if you will. Instead of blowing $50 on rather disposable pieces from H&M or Urban Outfitters, I’ve been keeping my spending to an absolute minimum — no new clothing purchases since AUGUST. That may be normal for many of you, but it took a LOT of self control and spending restraint to get me this far in the “fund”. I had made a few “key-pieces” purchases in August to refresh my Fall wardrobe, but I’ve been a good girl ever since 0:)

What about you ladies? Has there been a designer piece that you’ve wanted so badly you changed your shopping/spending habits to make it a reality purchase?
I’d love to hear about it in the comments section!

Coming Up For Air…Post-Vegas

Due to a much-needed digital detox and a recent job promotion, I took my last’s post’s last point to heart — “Unplug, log off, sign out, and ENJOY LIFE this summer.” I stopped checking my Instagram account, stopped drafting blog posts, stopped planning ahead, and just enjoyed my time in NYC as I maneuvered through the first few weeks of my new position. I wandered more, I spent more time with my boo, and I had enough free time that I no longer minded staying later in the office because I didn’t have a self-imposed deadline. I just was. I went with the flow, and I enjoyed life so much more.

Going into my 6th week in my sales position, it’s been an interesting road so far. Having faced age discrimination, cattiness, and egos beyond my wildest dreams…fashion sales are interesting to say the least! The most recent thrill was my first travel experience earlier this week to Las Vegas for the ENK Vegas trade show. I tried to snap pics as much as I could, but when you’re the new AE there’s not much down time! See the IG pics below — hover for captions/context.

As the new Account Executive for Andrew Marc’s RTW collection, I have a few trade show plans coming up before the holidays even hit: Coterie in NYC next month, Brand Assembly in LA + the F.I.G. in Dallas back-to-back in October — I’ll try n snap a few pics along the way ‘cuz there’s nothing better than remembering your first trade shows years from now when you don’t have to go any more :D

Treating Myself…Birthday Edition

Birthdays are a time for celebration, time with close friends, and a bit of self-indulgence. I celebrated my birthday this past Friday through Monday. Yes, I took off the Monday following my birthday because what better indulgence is there than time off from work? From a bit of shopping, to dinner out, to exploring the city, to a little spa time, I can happily say I’ll be returning to work on Tuesday with a bit more pep in my step…and a few new goodies to enjoy for Spring :) Enjoy my birthday weekend in Instagrams below:

Dreams DO Come True…

…to those who work their asses off.

Or so the saying goes :) Today marks the end of my 3rd week at my first full-time job, post-college. My wonderful work-fam at Andrew Marc hired me as their new Sales & Marketing Assistant after interning in the Marketing department for 6 months. Phew! I thought I’d never see the day I have a salary + health benefits. They didn’t waste any time either—I came back to the team in the midst of fashion industry chaos: Trade Show season, planning our next #NYFW runway show, planning in-store events…13-hour days don’t even begin to explain the amount of planning that goes into these things!

That being said, you can almost assume what I’ll say next. Yup, you got it: this is an ever-changing blog with my ever-changing life. As always, feel free to drop me a line—I always love to hear from you ladies and gents! But know, it may take me a lil’ longer than usual to get back to you (I tend to neglect my laptop after working a 10+ hour day. Can you blame me?).
